About

šŸ‘‹ Hey there, I’m Jack.

I’m a guy from NSW, Australia, who loves maps, rocks, public transport, and tinkering with stuff in python. I’m a geologist and spatial scientist by trade, and I’m currently working as a GIS and Database Scientist in the mining industry. I’m also a hobbyist photographer, which helps to get me out to cool places to take cool photos.

Check out the blog where I periodically post my (mis)adventures in programming, geology, and more; or my portfolio for some of my photography.

Work

GIS and Database Scientist

Evolution Mining
Parkes, NSW
2023 - Present

More details

Regular Duties

  • Analysis and authoring of geological and geospatial data using Python and GIS tools, enabling collaboration with geologists to drive decisions and achieve exploration outcomes.
  • Designed and managed ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) operations to process a variety of data streams, enabling timely integration into business and analytical systems.
  • Managed and maintained the site geological database using acQuire GIM Suite and MS SQL Server, in order to meet business requirements and ensure data quality.
  • Creating spatial products and maps using ArcGIS Pro, to support ongoing safety, scientific, and environmental tasks.
  • Maintained integration of data products with 3D CAD tools (Leapfrog Geo, Deswik, Datamine) to support data availability and align data specifications with team requirements.

Achievements

  • Developed a suite of custom geospatial/GIS tools in Python (ArcPy, Matplotlib, GeoPandas, SciPy), resulting in significant time savings to formerly manual tasks.
  • Developed tools enabling integration of hyperspectral mineralogical (XRD and SEM) data captured at draw points to inform metallurgical outcomes.
  • Identified opportunity to use Machine Learning (ML) to extract quantitative data from exploration logging comments, developed a project proposal and begun preliminary work.
  • Managed site-wide migration to new database platform, involving design and programming of input forms and data visualisation objects in consultation with a range of stakeholders, in order to create a user-friendly and robust geo-data platform that works for our team.
  • Applied evidence-based data visualisation techniques across the business using Power BI, Python, and Arena to communicate complex geospatial data to stakeholders.
  • Maintained version control, CI/CD, issue tracking, automation, and collaboration across development projects using GitHub and GitHub Actions.
  • Developed and championed a set of cartographic standards and documentation to ensure consistency of presentation across map products and improve collaboration.

Exploration Geologist

Evolution Mining
Parkes, NSW
2022 - 2023

More details
  • Conducted regular QAQC analysis of captured data (geological, geotechnical) and geochemical assay data, ensuring integrity and auditability of data
  • Analysed and interpreted hyperspectral flyover data using ENVI and ioGAS to identify alteration patterns via spectral unmixing techniques, aiding exploration targeting.
  • Analysed pit structural data using LiDAR packages (LAStools) and Deswik, contributing to a feasibility study structural model and increasing confidence in geotechnical plans.
  • Conducted detailed lithological and structural logging, data collection, and interpretation of drill products to support exploration objectives.
  • Produced detailed reports and recommendations for exploration programs using a variety of data analysis and spatial analysis techniques, including litho-geochemical analysis in ioGAS, geophysical mapping using pyGMI, and geological modelling and structural interpretation using 3D CAD software, enabling review of exploration outcomes and future planning.
  • Creation of consistent and clear mapping products using ArcGIS Pro, used in the planning, execution, and reporting of exploration projects in line with team objectives.
  • Planning and management of the execution of exploration programs, including permitting, stakeholder engagement, and risk assessment, ensuring the delivery of stated goals.
